The Jews & the Poles

Letter writer Leo Bach described the alleged terror under which the Jewish survivors of the Holocaust were living in post-war Poland (Calendar Letters, Dec. 27).
I lived during this period in Poland myself and my memories differ.
I remember well that some Jews had no problems in obtaining high positions in the communist bureaucracy. Many of the top ranking Communist Party activists and major figures in the government were Jews.
I recommend, to anyone interested, the recently published book “Them” by Teresa Toranska. It is a collection of interviews with some of the old communists who ruled in Poland in the post-war period. Out of seven persons interviewed, five were Jewish.
