Nearly 50,000 Swedish industrial employees went on strike, threatening to cripple production at major export companies. Engineers, technicians and other white-collar workers walked out of 40 factories of privately owned companies, including such export giants as the Volvo and SAAB-Scandia auto makers and appliance maker Electrolux. The strike could be a harbinger of more labor strife as union contracts expire this year. The union SIF called the strike after late-night negotiations failed to break the deadlock over wage hikes.
