BEIJING — Eight Chinese schoolgirls swallowed hundreds of sleeping tablets in an unsuccessful suicide pact after a teacher caught them playing poker in class, official newspapers said on Friday.
The high school students in Benxi, in northeast China, held a meeting and agreed to take the pills after being scolded and ordered to bring their parents to school to discuss their poker-playing, the China Youth News reported. The suicide attempt was discovered and all the girls, ages 14 to 16, recovered in a hospital, the reports said.
