Girls’ Basketball : Kennedy Edges Bolsa Grande

Freshman Valerie Ruiz of Kennedy High School sank a free throw with 45 seconds left to clinch a 52-49 victory over Bolsa Grande in a fight-marred Garden Grove League girls’ basketball game Friday at Bolsa Grande.

With almost two minutes left in the game, a fight broke out under the Bolsa Grande basket during a battle for a rebound. The benches emptied and Chris Milia (14 points) of Bolsa Grande and Gina Alcoser (6 points) of Kennedy were ejected.

Michelle Harris scored 22 points for Kennedy (6-7, 5-2) and teammate Lara Cummins added 18 rebounds. Jennifer Tracy scored 16 before fouling out with a minute left and Liz Flores added 13 for Bolsa Grande.

In other Garden Grove League games:

La Quinta 86, Rancho Alamitos 46--Senior forward Amy Jalewalia scored 27 points and had 17 rebounds for La Quinta at Rancho Alamitos. Laura Anderson had 16 points, Patti Leuta 14, Cindy Koller 13 and Donna Gondringer 11 as all five La Quinta starters scored in double figures.

Anderson also had 14 assists and 8 steals and Koller had 12 rebounds. La Quinta (14-3, 7-0) led at halftime, 53-18.

Santiago 56, Pacifica 32--Robin Caires scored 24 points and Carolyn Burns added 18 points and 24 rebounds for Santiago (10-4, 5-2) at Pacifica. Jenny Ditto scored 10 for Pacifica.

In a nonleague game:

Los Angeles Lutheran 56, Orange Lutheran 37--DeeDee Oyama scored 18 points for visiting Orange Lutheran (7-6).
