USIU Defeats St. Cloud on Lundgren’s Hat Trick

Matt Lundgren scored a hat trick as U.S. International University defeated St. Cloud State, 6-2, in a nonconference hockey game at the San Diego Ice Arena Friday night.

USIU was leading, 3-0, entering the third period when Lundgren scored, and Mike Racz added another goal 20 seconds later to put the game away. St. Cloud rallied for two power-play goals.

Jim Hau scored once and had four assists for USIU (12-11). Gary Woolford scored the game-winner at 9:59 of the second period for the Gulls. Tray Tuomie and Brian Cook each scored for St. Cloud (6-19-1). USIU outshot St. Cloud, 52-23.

The teams play again tonight at 7:30 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma Nazarene College squandered a 20-point lead in the second half and the Crusaders were defeated, 77-74, in overtime by host Fresno Pacific in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.

Point Loma Nazarene led, 57-37, with 8:46 remaining. Fresno Pacific rallied, and the Crusaders needed a 10-foot jumper by Steve Riddle with three seconds remaining to tie the game, 69-69, and force the overtime.

Fresno Pacific (3-14, 2-2) made the first basket in overtime and held onto the lead.

John Ekeroth scored a career-high 26 points, including 4 of 5 from three-point range, for Point Loma Nazarene (6-11, 1-2). Riddle added 17.

Brian Falls led Fresno Pacific with 24 points.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma Nazarene couldn’t overcome a poor shooting performance as the Crusaders were defeated, 59-58, by Fresno Pacific College in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Fresno.

Freshman Suzie Jones led PLNC (12-6, 2-1) with 14 points, and Laura Mars and Ann Duffy added 11 apiece. Marguerete Horn scored 10 for Fresno Pacific (11-4, 3-1).

Point Loma Nazarene shot 34% from the floor and was 10 of 16 from the line. Fresno shot 41% from the floor, but was 9 of 11 from the line.

Melinda Harrison scored 26 to lead host University of San Francisco to a 65-53 West Coast Athletic Conference victory over the University of San Diego.

USF (4-11, 1-2) led, 27-18, at halftime and maintained that lead throughout most of the second half. USF made 21 of 25 free throws.

Jane Gilpin scored 24 for USD (6-10, 2-1). Teammate Paula Mascari added 13.

YACHTING

Mike Gillum won one race and placed second in two others to take the early lead in the Championship Division of the Thistle Midwinters West Regatta on Mission Bay.
