The Persian Gulf state of Kuwait signed a $1.9-billion contract with the United States to buy 40 American-made F-l8 fighter planes and other weapons, the official Kuwait News Agency said. The F-18 Hornet, one of the world’s most advanced fighter-bombers, is made by McDonnell Douglas and sells for $17 million. Congress had modified the Kuwaiti arms package because of objections from Israel over the inclusion of Maverick anti-tank missiles in the deal. Only Canada, Australia and Spain have so far acquired the F-18.
