And a Cleveland judge has declared a mistrial in a $2.75-million suit filed by a television cameraman against Prince because the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported a $100,000 out-of-court settlement offer and thus might have prejudiced a fair trial. Common Pleas Judge Frank J. Gorman admonished the paper for revealing the rejected offer in the lawsuit by photographer James R. Gates. The lawyers told the judge they had heard the settlement offer reported on radio stations Wednesday morning. Gates, a photographer for WEWS-TV, said he was slugged by one of Prince’s bodyguards in an alley Sept. 5, 1984, as he tried to photograph Prince entering a nightclub.
