South Bay residents can dispose of household hazardous wastes free of charge this Saturday at the Palos Verdes Peninsula landfill in Rolling Hills Estates.
Such common household toxic wastes as motor oil, solvents, thinners and varnishes, pesticides and other garden products, photographic and hobby chemicals, cleaning compounds with acid or lye will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Paint, explosives, ammunition and radioactive materials cannot be accepted.
The landfill is at 26401 Crenshaw Blvd. between Rolling Hills Road and Palos Verdes Drive North.
A licensed hazardous-waste contractor will be on hand to collect the wastes, which cannot be legally disposed of in household garbage. Up to 5 gallons of waste products will be accepted per car. None of the material will be buried at the landfill.
The household hazardous-waste roundup is sponsored by Los Angeles County in cooperation with local sanitation districts.
