Luciano Pavarotti named 40 singers winners of the third Opera Company of Philadelphia-Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition on Sunday night. “But I must tell you, they are all winners,” the tenor said late Sunday night as he stood on stage at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music. A year and a half ago, when this competition began, there was a field of 1,500 singers. There were 19 winners in the first competition that began in 1980 with 500 singers and 54 in the second, from a field of 1,000. The format for selecting winners has drawn criticism. Among the winners were 16 Americans.
