MUENSTER, West Germany — Authorities today detained a former pro-Nazi Latvian police commander who had faced deportation from the United States for allegedly carrying out World War II atrocities.
Boleslav Maikovskis, 83, was being investigated “in connection with charges of murder and attempted murder,” said Dortmund prosecutor Klaus Schacht. Maikovskis, formerly of Mineola, N.Y., was picked up at his home in Muenster because authorities believed he might try to flee West Germany, Schacht said. Maikovskis had applied for political asylum in West Germany after fleeing the United States last year.
