Mexico’s 1st Astronaut Urges Space Research

MEXICO CITY — Mexico must participate in the space programs of industrialized nations if it wants the benefits of developments in space-related technologies and research, the country’s first astronaut said.
Rodolfo Neri Vela, who participated in a mission of the U.S. space shuttle Atlantis in November, 1985, said the government should actively cooperate with U.S., Soviet, Chinese and Japanese space research programs, the newspaper El Nacional reported Saturday.
“It would be an error not to take advantage of vanguard space technologies that would allow us to advance in other areas like electronics . . . ,” Neri Vela said.
