The United States repeated its Olympic gold-medal performance by defeating the Soviet Union in the preliminaries of the Japan Cup men’s volleyball competition, and Argentina beat Japan in opening-day play.
The United States won, 14-16, 15-7, 15-7, 9-15, 15-12 in the first match at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium.
Argentina defeated Japan, 15-6, 14-16, 11-15, 15-12, 17-15.
