Heather Freeman, a 6-0 junior middle blocker for La Reina High led the Regents in kills and blocks Thursday night in a Southern Section 2-A Division first-round playoff match.
But it was her back-row play that had Coach Stan Hirsch talking after La Reina beat St. Joseph of Santa Maria, 15-12, 15-7, 15-12, at La Reina.
“Normally she doesn’t play back row for us, but we had to rotate her back there,” Hirsch said. “She played outstanding defense for us.”
When Freeman was in the front row, she also did well--hitting for 11 kills while making 6 blocks. Caroline Russo and Simone Boden also had 9 kills for La Reina (14-3), which will play the winner of the Ontario-Canyon Springs match.
La Reina, which has never advanced beyond the second round of the playoffs, won the Tri-Valley League and is ranked third in the 2-A.
