Aztec Basketball Team Opens With Exhibition

The San Diego State men’s basketball team opens its season tonight at 7:30 in Peterson Gym with an exhibition game against the West End 36ers, a professional team from Australia.
Jim Brandenburg, in his second year as coach, has four returning starters: center Mitch McMullen, forward Sam Johnson and guards Tony Ross and Bryan Williams.
Zack Jones, a former San Diego State player, and Lorenzo Romar each scored 30 points for Athletes in Action (6-13) in a 118-107 loss at Iowa Sunday.
VOLLEYBALL
Outside hitter Dianna Klintworth, a junior, and setter Laurie Bertanyi, a senior, from UC San Diego have been named to the first-team NCAA Division III All-American women’s volleyball team. Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Vetter was named to the second team.
FOOTBALL
Randy Welniak passed for a touchdown and ran for another late Saturday night as 16th-ranked Wyoming (11-1) defeated host Hawaii, 28-22, to cap a second consecutive undefeated season in the Western Athletic Conference.
Wyoming, which already clinched the WAC championship, will face Oklahoma State in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium Dec. 30.
