There were no surprises in the first day of the $40,000 women’s Hermosa Open. The top four seeded players in the double-elimination tournament advanced to today’s semifinals adjacent to the Hermosa Beach Pier.

Top-ranked Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock cruised all the way through the quarterfinals where they defeated ninth-seeded Holly McPeak and Barbara Fontana, 15-8.

Kirby and Rock will play fourth-seeded Nina Matthies and Linda Carillo in one of today’s semifinals. Second-seeded Lori Kotas and Gail Castro will face third-seeded Elaine Roque and Janice Opalinski in the other semifinal.

Today’s matches start at 8:30 a.m. and the final is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
