CYPRESS — Estancia won titles in the mixed and boys’ doubles and was runner-up in girls’ doubles Saturday in the Southern Section individual badminton championships at Cypress College.
Buena Park senior Noy Sundara defended her girls’ singles title, defeating Diamond Bar’s Amy Fu, 11-6, 11-4. Sundara, who hasn’t lost since her sophomore season, finished the year 57-0 in singles matches. She was 54-0 as a junior.
“I was keeping the birdie consistently inbounds,” Sundara said. “That is my power and my strength. I was kind of using my head to see where she (Fu) was. My serve was good. I got a couple of aces.”
Estancia’s mixed doubles team of Lan Ly and Doan Nguyen teamed to defeat Alhambra Keppel’s cousin combination of Mana and Som Phone Meksavanh, 18-14, 15-7, to defend its section title. Nguyen, a sophomore, teamed with Lan Ly’s cousin, Huang, to win the event last year.
Chau Nguyen and Linh Doan combined to give the Eagles the boys’ doubles title by defeating Keppel’s Philip Chou and Larry Huang, 6-15, 15-4, 15-7.
Keppel’s Bessie Chen and Betty Lu-Huyen came back to defeat Estancia’s CamTu Tram and Doan Nguyen in girls’ doubles, 10-15, 15-11, 15-7.
Etiwanda’s Ho Song defeated Garden Grove’s Sang Kim, 17-15, 18-13, in the semifinals and Diamond Bar’s Suko Sosrodjojo, 15-9, 12-15, 15-7, to win the boys’ singles championship. Sosrodjojo defeated Bolsa Grande’s Cong Ta, 15-8, 15-11, to reach the finals.
