Small Harvest of Scallops Seen: This season’s harvest of bay scallops is looking slim, but tighter household budgets should keep prices from soaring. “Scallops are perceived as a white tablecloth item,” said Bob Mone, a seafood buyer in New Bedford, Mass., and president of Martha’s Vineyards Co-Op. “Folks aren’t going out to those restaurants as much, and they’re skimping at the grocery store these days, so the economy rather than the supply is driving the market right now.” The commercial season for scallops opened in most places last week and continues through March.
