COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Dana Hills’ Mall Wins Debut for UCLA

Anne Mall, a Dana Hills graduate who has won tournaments at the high school and junior level, overcame two opponents and a leg injury in her collegiate debut Thursday in the Rolex-ITCA Southern California Women’s Tennis Championships at UC Irvine.
Mall, a UCLA freshman, opened play with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara’s Courtney Strauss, a Corona del Mar graduate. In a second-round match, Mall defeated Merete Stockman of Pepperdine, 6-4, 6-1.
The four Irvine players in the singles main draw were eliminated Thursday. Gina Garcia lost to second-seeded Sakolwan Kacharoen of the University of San Diego, 6-2, 6-1, and Ali Yoshimoto fell to Jane Yates of Arizona, 6-1, 6-4. Biljana Korac was ousted by Kirsten Smith of Pepperdine, 7-5, 6-2, and Maggie Powers was defeated by Suzi Agassi of UNLV, 6-3, 6-3.
