SOUTHERN SECTION VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS : Los Alamitos Advances by Holding On in Game 5

Los Alamitos nearly squandered an 11-3, fifth-game lead but held on for a 10-15, 15-6, 13-15, 15-7, 15-12 victory over Torrance Bishop Montgomery in a Southern Section Division 4-A second-round volleyball match Friday at Los Alamitos.
Bishop Montgomery (10-8) cut the deficit to 11-9, but Los Alamitos scored four of the last seven points.
Kelly Kuebler had 16 kills for Los Alamitos (14-2) and Luann Petix added 15.
Kirstin Laird, whose playing time was limited because of a sprained left knee had 39 assists. Laird sustained the injury in a collision with a teammate during pre-game warmups before Wednesday’s victory over Inglewood.
In other 4-A matches:
Marina 3, Palos Verdes Peninsula 0--Jaime Wehrhan had 12 kills and Tricia Rossman had 29 assists for the Vikings (12-6) in the second-round victory at Peninsula.
Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 3, Cypress 1--The Centurions finished 10-8 after the loss to Notre Dame at home. Heather Lowe had 20 kills and Misty Hartung added 10 for Cypress.
In a 1-A match:
Capistrano Valley Christian 3, Serrano 0--Karen Benkowski had 11 kills as the top-seeded Eagles improved to 15-1.
