Matillo completed a three-year rebuilding project at Buena Park by tying Sunny Hills for the league championship last season. Buena Park won only one game in Matillo’s first season 1988-89), but gradually improved to 12 victories the next season and 16 victories last season. “This is the best group from top to bottom in my four years here,” Matillo said. “We have three returning players from a championship team and some good depth.” Matillo also persuaded Molinar, a two-time all-league football player, and White to play basketball after they sat out last season. Barrios is the team’s best player and ranks with Sunny Hills’ Terry Mann and Troy’s Randy Abbott as the league’s top players. Barrios, who is a force inside despite his height, averaged 15.2 points and 8.9 rebounds last season. “We had a bit of a disjointed summer with four of our top seven players on the football team,” said Matillo, whose team team lost its season opener to Laguna Hills, 50-44. “The biggest question mark right now is at point guard. We have no experience at the position and it’s a major concern.”
