Restrictions on Machine Tool Imports Extended: President Bush extended restrictions on imports of machine tools from Japan and Taiwan on national security grounds. The extension will be phased out over two years, White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said. U.S. manufacturers have said they need additional time to become competitive against foreign machine tool makers. The import restrictions were imposed in 1986.
