Phone System Hackers Cost City $20,000
City officials are stuck with a $20,000 phone bill. AT&T; investigators say hackers broke into the city’s phone system and made calls to the Philippines over five days in July.
Officials believe the hacker gained access to a voicemail box pass code. The system then was manipulated to allow calls placed to and from the line.
The city’s typical monthly phone bill is about $10,000. In July, it was $40,000. AT&T; will pay about $10,000 of the bill, but it says the city is responsible for the rest.
