American Airlines’ sale: $99 each way between Los Angeles and New York

Los Angeles or New York? Under a sweeping winter airfare sale by American Airlines, you can have both, no matter which direction you’re traveling, for $99 each way ($198 round trip) . Even better, the special price applies to flights from three Southern California airports.
The deal is part of a collaborative effort by American, NYC & Company and the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau to promote tourism in both cities.
The deal: The $99 fare (plus tax) each way from American Airlines is good for flights from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Burbank Airport (BUR) and Orange County’s John Wayne Airport (SNA) to New York’s John F. Kennedy (JFK) or La Guardia (LGA) airports in New York. Note that the fare, good each way, is based on round-trip purchase.
When: Good for flights Jan. 5 to Feb. 25, with some blackout dates. But you must reserve your tickets by 11:59 PST Saturday.
Tested: I accessed the American Airlines deal by going through New York tourism’s Web page “Get More NYC.” I was able to book a flight departing from LAX on Feb. 4 and returning Feb. 9 for the $99 pretax fare each way. Total round-trip cost with tax: $219.
I planned my visit to coincide with NYC Restaurant Week from Jan. 24 to Feb. 10 (hey, that’s longer than a week!) where you can sample meals at some of the city’s best eateries at a fixed price.
