The World : Soviet Jet Crashes; 11 Killed

A Soviet Aeroflot airliner missed the runway while trying to land in Krasnovodsk, flipped over and broke in two, killing 11 people and injuring 12, Soviet media reported. “The weather was fine, the air was clear and transparent, visibility was perfect--nothing augured the tragedy,” the official Tass news agency reported. It said that 127 passengers were aboard the Tupolev 154 when it attempted to land at the port city on the Caspian Sea en route from Moscow to the Turkmenian capital of Ashkhabad. The reports by Tass and the government newspaper Izvestia marked the first time that Soviet media had announced a fatal Soviet air crash on the day it occurred.
