A 26-year-old man raced his Porsche the wrong way on Interstate 5 and slammed head-on into a pickup truck late Thursday. He suffered major chest injuries when he was pinned for 10 minutes by the steering wheel, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
Leo Alexis Vasquez of Highland, San Bernardino County, was freed by paramedics and later arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor drunk driving, said Ken Daily, the CHP spokesman.
Vasquez had been driving more than 80 m.p.h. northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Alicia Parkway, Daily said.
The truck driver was unhurt. Vasquez was in serious condition Friday at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, a hospital spokeswoman said.
