Local News in Brief : Countywide : New Executive Director Announced for LAFCO

James Colangelo, assistant executive director of the county Local Agency Formation Commission since 1984, has been named LAFCO’s executive director.

Colangelo replaces Richard Turner, who had been executive director of LAFCO for 22 years. Turner announced his resignation in March, saying he wanted to do other things.

County Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez, one of two supervisors on the commission, said Colangelo was selected because he brings hands-on “and on-line experience to the job” and because he “understands the magnitude of the job LAFCO faces.”

The commission oversees municipal annexations and the creation of cities and special districts. Its workload has increased dramatically in the last few years because of several proposals for new cities in the south county.

The executive director provides reports on proposals to the five-member commission and makes recommendations.
