Voting on Auto Insurance Initiatives

Is Hahn serious? In his column he calls for an elected insurance commissioner theorizing that this will remove the insurance commissioner from the control of the insurance industry. I agree that most insurance commissioners are captives of the insurance industry.
However, making this statewide office subject to election will only tighten the greedy insurance industry’s hold. There is no special interest group except insurance which has the money to guarantee election of its own stooge every four years.
Perhaps Hahn should consider endorsing Proposition 100, the good driver initiative, which would add a check and balance to our state system by creating the office of consumer advocate (under the attorney general) specifically to represent the interests of California insurance consumers in matters of regulatory oversight and in policing of the Unfair Claims Practices Act which was effectively eviscerated by the Supreme Court.
