City Puts Curfew on 2 Parking Lots in Mission Beach

Concerned about crime, noise and crowding, the San Diego City Council voted unanimously Monday to close the Mission Point and Jetty parking lots at Mission Beach from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The emergency action takes effect immediately and will last until at least Dec. 14, when a council committee is scheduled to review the policy, along with reports from City Manager John Lockwood’s office on ways to control crime and noise in the area.
Councilman Bruce Henderson, who represents the area, said residents have complained vehemently about gangs congregating in the area, loud radios and traffic congestion, especially in the summer.
Henderson said firefighters have told him that summer traffic jams are so bad that firefighters assume a number of houses would burn before crews could reach a fire.
The closing sends gangs a message that “we’re not going to wait until they murder somebody before we take action,” Henderson said.
