BASEBALL: DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Carter Got Help, but Finally Got Him
- Share via
It took a while for Gary Carter to get his man, but he finally did.
In the fourth inning Friday night, Carter, making a rare start as Dodger catcher, caught Vince Coleman stealing for the first time. The Dodgers guessed right on a pitchout and Coleman was out by such a wide margin he didn’t bother to slide. After the out was called, Carter pointed to Coach Joe Amalfitano in the dugout. “I give a lot of credit to Amalfitano, who calls all the throw-overs (to first) and pitchouts,” Carter said. “He had a premonition. That was a long string (Coleman) had there--I’ve never thrown him out. It was kind of sweet.”
Eddie Murray’s eighth-inning run batted in was the 1,390th of his career, 38th on the all-time list. . . . Ramon Martinez, leads the National League with a 1.72 earned-run average. He has won five in a row, with an earned-run average of 0.65 in that stretch. He beat today’s opponent, David Cone, 3-1 last week in New York. . . . Mark Cresse coached first base Saturday after Ben Hines was sent home because of flu.
